The Boss Heavy Metal HM-2 has gained an almost cult following in recent years. Released in 1983, it was the first distortion pedal tuned specifically for the relatively new genre of Metal.
Although players as distinguished as Prince, Eric Clapton, Johnny Marr and David Gilmour all used the Boss Heavy Metal HM-2 to great effect during their careers, the HM-2's turning point was arguably the 1990 release of Entombed's Left Hand Path. This Swedish Death Metal album was noted as inventing the "chainsaw" or "Gothenburg" sound, achieved by cranking all the dials up to maximum for an aggressive and in-your-face sound.
The Heavy Metal HM-2 is a surprisingly versatile distortion pedal, however, thanks to its powerful EQ which enables you to cut or boost each frequency band by up to 20dB. This EQ section also makes the HM-2 a superb pedal for stacking, as it can adjust the sound of any pedal before it in the chain.
