Boost and overdrive pedals were originally designed to push tube amps of the day into bluesy breakup and tube saturation that simply cranking the amps to full volume couldn't achieve.
This was, of course, before the advent of master volume controls and high-gain amps - many of those classic rock tones you know and love were achieved with help from boost or overdrive pedals.
Boost pedals such as the Raygun FX Vintage Booster push the front of the amp with extra decibels of clean gain, which tends to act like a volume boost until you really push things.
Overdrive pedals are designed to saturate the power tubes for more grit and breakup than a boost pedal - although the difference between boost and overdrive pedals is a bit murky. Some, such as the Stompnorth Midgie Booster Overdrive occupy both camps.
